I live with my sister, and two other girls, in a quirky house in Safety Bay, Australia. We’ve looked at eachother’s diaries and schedules and tried to put together a healthy system so the house is kept clean and cared for, and we recently tossed around ideas for better eating. It can so easily become take out, or dining out when you’re four working and sociable women, but we all agreed that our bank accounts and our figures would probably appreciate it if we put that extra effort into our meals.
As “uni flat” as it sounds, we put together a roster, the nights might alternate but we each cook a healthy meal for all once a week. That’s 4 nights of healthy meals, our Wednesday night is usually booked by a social night we do with several others, we each take turns cooking for that too. That leaves only two nights in our week not catered for, and usually left overs will cover one, leaving the last night as our lucky night of self help, take out or dine out (now we can’t ditch that joy completely).
My sister is happiest in the kitchen, I’m not, the other two are both younger than us and are excited about learning to cook. When I say “cook” I mean meals that include veggies, and don’t include the term “instant”. So here I am, wondering what I feel like eating as most standard meals bore me, not so much to eat, but definitely to make. I like flavor and culture, and health, but I’m an artist, and so to cook without creativity is as much a chore as cleaning house.
Thursday 23rd February: Round 1
I wanted something refreshing and cool, a salad of sorts, to ease the heat of summer. But I do appreciate meat. I was texting some fun ideas with a kitchen-happy friend when I heard my taste buds crave a citrus twist and I got a hankering for meat balls. A fresh spinach leaf salad with a few bits and bobs and meatballs seemed easy enough. It just needed a couple of things to make it exciting.
I figured if I served each salad in a tea cup, fresh and full and juicy, then the experience would also be fun… Rounds in a cup. It ended up being a round beef rissole salad with grapes topped with an orange and ginger dressing and crunchy tortillas crackers, in a cup. It was a hit… Suddenly I was inspired.
A few friends were informed and I realized I could make a bit of a short term fun fad of this. Each time I cook I could make a meal with rounds in a cup… Or a desert. Anyway, I can see I’m going to need a variety of cups… Best I keep record of what ideas come into creation on here, feel free to suggest some, or come over and taste some.
